Philip is a dear friend, talented winemaker and apparently a master of Pinot Noir winemaking in the German Mosel area. And this year? It's better than ever before.
In short, up to now the Pinot Noir used to be a blend of very old vine, steep vineyards and a few flatter, until recently fertilized Spätburgunder vineyards. Since the 2020 vintage, these wines have been separated. The beautiful, gnarly old vines go into this Pinot Noir, the flatter vineyards go into a red version of his Kontakt.
This Pinot Noir is aged in barrels from the legendary Burgundian winemaker Armand Rousseau. These barrels are quite young still, still imparting a mild flavor that enriches the wine. It is juicy and complex at the same time, it kinda reminds us of Jean Foillard's Cote de Py, with the added slate terroir of the Mose. A fantastic wine and one of the best Pinot Noirs we've had from the Mosel.
